Winner of the 2019 Enlightened Piano Radio Album of the Year, Dan's 4th Solo Piano album MOUNTAINS MADE OF SHADOW, ANTHEMS MADE OF LIGHT (Mt. Pollux Music), spent 7 consecutive months on the ZMR Top 100. His previous music peaked at #7 on the ZMR Top 100, #4 on the OWM Top 100, and was one of John P. Olsen s Top 10 of 2012. Dan's concerts are usually full of his original works, but can include cover songs and, seasonally, holiday music. "The music is not about me, it's about what the audience and I share together." Conservatory trained, Dan's compositions begin with a rock-solid formal sensibility, and along the way are overlaid with sparkling melodies and flashes of unexpected improvisation.
After composing solo piano music since the mid-1980s, Dan Kennedy has developed one of the more distinctive voices in his genre. Melody and harmony are central, with soul-stirring meditation and movement always percolating. This is his first songbook.
"A lot of what I do when I perform is to play home concerts. When I do this I can't help thinking of the concerts in Europe in the 1830s and 1840s when every performer included an original composition or an improvisation. I've had people come up to me after the concert and tell me, you played this differently than on the record. I know! I tell them. My problem is that I probably couldn't re-create exactly what I did the day I recorded anyways. I tend to take the pulse in the hall and synthesize that feeling with the music in the moment.
"I admittedly have been very sluggish to put out the sheet music. These editions, one of Album versions and one of Easy Piano versions, represent the absolute heart and soul of who I am and what I believe. I really want to get these books into the hands of those who dare to play the piano.
"Transcribing the music note for note was really hard, even for a trained musician. Usually it's not hard figuring out what notes were played; what's tricky in notating is the rhythm.
"When I went to create an Easy Piano version, I really struggled. How can I make easy piano versions which are still beautiful and intriguing? It was a new experience, and one I came to cherish, because it was sort of like writing a new piece of music. But I had to really 'get over' myself."
